Lidar Campaigns in Complex Terrain
Date: Wednesday 8th November 2017
Venue: Hotel campus.guest, University of Stuttgart, 70569 Stuttgart, Germany
Workshop leader: Andrew Clifton, WindForS
33 participants from 12 countries took part in the Lidar in Complex Terrain workshop held in Stuttgart on 8th November 2017. The workshop, led by Andrew Clifton from WindForS, started with invited presentations and then split up into groups to carry out table-top case studies to identify how lidar is used in complex terrain and the challenges that are faced. In typical industry applications the strongest need was for best practices and standards, while more research-oriented applications were challenged by personnel and equipment costs. A common challenge was the level of expertise that is required, which could be offset by embedding best practices in support software. All of these challenges are being actively addressed by the wind lidar community and the needs for standards and research funding reflect the relative maturity of the devices themselves. IEA Wind Task 32 will continue to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience around wind lidar.
